ISAAA Launches 2014 Report on Global Status of GM Crops |

The Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops: 2014 (ISAAA Brief 49) was launched on January 28, 2015 at China World Hotel in Beijing, China during a press conference attended by 34 media practitioners. The following day, January 29, a seminar was also held at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, organized by Chinese Society of Biotechnology, Chinese Society of Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology, The Crop Science Society of China, China Society of Plant Protection, Chinese Society of Agri-biotechnology, and ISAAA. This was attended by 200 stakeholders from the government, academe, research institutes, media agencies, and private companies.

GM Camelina, Safe Feed for Salmon |
Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with health benefits, making it essential as a dietary nutrient for humans. Fish and other seafood are the main sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. However, the Omega-3 content of fish oil is not enough to satisfy the human dietary requirement for Omega 3. Thus, researchers from Rohamsted Research, University of Sterling and Biomar Ltd conducted a feeding study using genetically modified (GM) camelina (Camelina sativa) as substitute feed for salmon. GM camelina contains an algal gene to produce oil rich in fatty acids that will help increase the Omega-3 content in salmon.

GROs for Creating Safer GMOs |
Environmental safety of the release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has long been an issue affecting its public acceptance. With this, Yale University researchers developed a new way in producing GMOs that are safer for the environment. This was done though the use of synthetic amino acids not found in nature. This synthetic amino acid is inserted in the DNA of a bacterial strain when the DNA has been rewrote to activate the important genes for growth. Researchers refer to it as genomically recoded organisms (GROs). GROs also contains a new genetic code that connects the growth of bacteria to synthetic amino acids.
