The Asia and Oceania region has emerged as a central powerhouse in global agricultural biotechnology, cultivating 20.81 million hectares across nine pioneering nations in 2024. According to ISAAA Brief 57 Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops in 2024, this expansion represents nearly 10% of the world's total biotech crop plantings, driven by aggressive growth and major regulatory milestones. India continues to dominate the global market in Bt cotton, while China is rapidly accelerating the commercial scale-up of GM maize and soybeans following extensive approvals. Further driving innovation, Australia made global history by granting the first regulatory approval for a disease-resistant GM banana alongside new climate-resilient crop traits.

EFSA Releases Assessment of GM RF3 Canola Quality Brassica juncea |

The European Food Safety Authority (GMO Panel) has published a positive scientific opinion evaluating the safety of genetically modified (GM) RF3 Canola Quality Brassica juncea. Conducted by EFSA's Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO Panel), the assessment evaluated application EFSA-GMO-NL-2019-158, submitted by BASF Agricultural Solutions, which seeks authorization to import and process the crop for use in food and animal feed across the European Union and does not include cultivation.

Economic and Social Factors Hinder GM Crop Adoption in South Africa |

A study has examined how farmers in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa, view genetically modified (GM) crops and the factors influencing their adoption decisions. Through interviews with 30 small-scale and large-scale farmers, the researchers found that economic challenges, environmental concerns, and public attitudes all play important roles in determining whether farmers are willing to adopt GM technology.
