In a press release from the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare, Nigeria is planning to introduce labelling and traceability protocols during a workshop hosted by the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) and the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB). This movement is part of the Federal Government's commitment to deploying safe, science-driven biotechnology in the country.

APHIS Deregulates Bioengineered Blue-Purple Moth Orchid |

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has determined that Phalaenopsis orchid (ISK-311NR-4), developed by Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha, Limited, using genetic engineering to have modified flower color. According to APHIS, it is unlikely that the bioengineered blue-purple moth orchid will pose a greater risk as a plant pest than the unmodified comparator. Thus, the orchid is no longer subject to their regulation for products of genetic engineering.

A team of bioengineers from Kobe University has developed a sustainable alternative to PET plastics by engineering E. coli bacteria to produce pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDCA) from glucose. The breakthrough, published in Metabolic Engineering, marks a significant step toward creating biodegradable, high-performance plastics that could surpass petroleum-based materials.
