Media Exposure Influences GMO Perceptions in Montenegro

Researchers from the University of Montenegro in Europe and partner institutions examined how consumer perceptions of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) influence the adoption of agricultural biotechnology in the country. The study, published in GM Crops & Food, revealed significant insights into how public acceptance and concerns about human and animal health and the environment shape consumer attitudes.
A total of 1,178 respondents participated in an online survey to assess attitudes toward GMOs, health and environmental risk perceptions, and media influences. The results of the study revealed that 76% of respondents viewed GMOs as harmful to human health. The study found that media exposure played a significant role in shaping their perceptions and attitudes. The researchers said that the reliance on online and traditional media could have amplified the risk perceptions and biases of consumers due to the misinformation and false narratives about GMOs.
The findings highlight a major knowledge gap and widespread skepticism among consumers in Montenegro, with many showing limited awareness of GMOs and expressing confusion over regulations and labeling. The researchers recommended tailored educational programs and stronger public outreach by government agencies and scientific institutions to improve consumer understanding of GMOs.
