USDA APHIS Deregulates GE Corn with Multiple Herbicide Resistance

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has officially granted nonregulated status to MON 87429 maize, a genetically engineered (GE) corn variety developed by Bayer CropScience (Monsanto). This regulatory decision removes APHIS oversight under 7 CFR part 340, determining that the GE corn is unlikely to pose a plant pest risk compared to conventional corn varieties. The decision clears the path for commercial cultivation and broader integration of the trait into breeding programs.
Engineered with multi-trait technology, MON 87429 maize provides resistance to four distinct herbicide chemistries: dicamba, glufosinate, quizalofop, and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). In addition to broad weed control flexibility, the line incorporates a tissue-specific glyphosate resistance mechanism. This specialized feature is designed to streamline and improve efficiency in commercial hybrid maize seed production by enabling targeted male-sterility and pollination control without relying on traditional mechanical detasseling.
The determination follows a comprehensive scientific evaluation and public review process spanning several years under Docket No. APHIS-2020-0021. APHIS reached its conclusion after analyzing data submitted in Bayer's petition, conducting a Plant Pest Risk Assessment (PPRA), completing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and reviewing thousands of public comments. With the approval finalized, growers gain a versatile tool to manage tough weed pressures and optimize hybrid seed multiplication.
