University of Melbourne Seeks Approval for Biofortified GM Wheat Commercial Release

Australia's Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has received license application DIR 227 from The University of Melbourne for the commercial cultivation of wheat genetically modified (GM) with a gene from rice to produce grain with increased levels of bioavailable iron and zinc.
The GM wheat has been engineered for increased levels of nicotianamine, a naturally occurring plant compound that plays a vital role in metal ion transport and micronutrient accumulation. By elevating nicotianamine content, the crop is designed to improve nutrient uptake and biofortification, specifically targeting higher iron and zinc levels in the grain, to address global micronutrient deficiencies through staple food supplies.
The University of Melbourne is seeking approval to commercially grow the GM wheat Australia-wide, subject to restrictions in some Australian States and Territories for marketing reasons. The primary intended use of the GM wheat is as animal feed, but it may also enter human food.
The OGTR is preparing the Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP) for the application, expected to be released for public comment and advice from experts, agencies, and authorities in early December 2026, with at least two months for submission of comments.
