First Five-Bt Protein Soybean Shows Strong Protection Against Major Caterpillar Pests

July 8, 2026

Researchers from Brazil have demonstrated that a genetically modified (GM) soybean expressing five Bt proteins provides strong protection against major caterpillar pests affecting soybean production in the country. The study evaluated the performance of MON 94637 soybean, which produces the Bt proteins Cry1A.2 and Cry1B.2, alone and in combination with three additional Bt proteins.

In laboratory bioassays, soybean leaves expressing the Bt proteins caused 100% mortality of newly hatched larvae of major soybean pests, including soybean looper, velvetbean caterpillar, and southern armyworm, across different plant growth stages. The GM soybean also remained highly effective against Cry1Ac-resistant insect populations. Field trials conducted at multiple locations across Brazil confirmed significantly lower pest infestations and reduced leaf damage compared with non-Bt soybean varieties.

The researchers concluded that stacking five Bt proteins provides broad and durable protection against important soybean pests. They noted that this is the first soybean to combine five Bt proteins, offering a new pest management strategy that could help delay insect resistance while improving soybean protection and productivity in tropical farming systems.
