European Commission Authorizes GM Sugar Beet and Renews GM Maize for Food and Feed Use

March 4, 2026

The European Commission has authorized a genetically modified (GM) sugar beet and renewed approval for a GM maize for use in food and animal feed. The decision was announced on February 27, 2026, following a scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), concluding that both crops are as safe as their conventional counterparts.

According to the Commission, these GM crops have undergone a comprehensive evaluation to ensure a high level of protection for human and animal health and the environment. The decisions allow the crops to be imported and used in food and feed within the European Union, but do not cover permission for cultivation.

The authorisations are valid for 10 years, and all products derived from these crops must comply with the EU's labelling and traceability rules. The Commission said it was legally required to adopt the decisions after EU member states failed to reach a qualified majority in support of or against them.
