Smallholders in the Global Arena: The Socio-Economic Impact of GM Adoption in Indonesia and Beyond

The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), Inc., in partnership with CropLife Asia and CropLife Indonesia, will host a hybrid webinar, titled Smallholders in the Global Arena: The Socio-Economic Impact of GM Adoption in Indonesia and Beyond, in Jakarta, Indonesia, and via Zoom on October 14, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM (GMT+7). Zoom registration is now open to all interested participants.
The continued adoption of biotech/GM crops has generated evidence on their contributions to productivity, farmer livelihoods, food security, and environmental sustainability. The webinar will provide updates on country-level and global data on biosafety, adoption, and socioeconomic impacts, offering stakeholders insights into the evolving role of biotech/GM crops in agriculture. The discussions will include the following topics:
- Indonesia Biosafety Update
- Highlights of the Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops (2024)
- Post-Monitoring Insights on GM Crop Adoption in Indonesia
- Socio-Economic Impact of GM Seeds in Indonesia: Case Study on Maize 2025-2026
- Global Socio-Economic and Environmental Impacts 1996-2024
The webinar will feature presentations from Ir. Inge Retnowati, M.S., Director of Biodiversity at Indonesia's Ministry of Environment; Dr. Rhodora Romero-Aldemita, Executive Director of ISAAA Inc.; Dr. Atekan, S.P., M.Si., S.H., Head of the Assembly and Modernization Center for Agriculture at the Biotechnology and Genetic Resources; Prof. Dr. Erizal Jamal of the Indonesia Research Agency (BRIN); and Mr. Graham Brookes, agricultural economist at PG Economics Ltd., UK.
