Study Finds Greater Support for Health and Environmental Biotech Applications

October 7, 2026

Researchers from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry at the Polish Academy of Sciences reviewed existing research on public perceptions and acceptance of agricultural biotechnology in Poland, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and newer genomic techniques (NGTs). The review examined factors that influence public attitudes toward these technologies and identified gaps in current research.

The researchers conducted a structured literature search using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. They analyzed studies on public awareness, perceptions, attitudes, and factors affecting acceptance of agricultural biotechnology. The review found that most research in Poland has focused on GMOs, while evidence on public perceptions of NGTs remains limited.

The findings showed that acceptance varies depending on the application, perceived risks and benefits, trust in science and institutions, and public awareness. Biotechnology applications linked to health and environmental benefits generally received greater support than those related to food production. The researchers said further research on NGTs and social factors could support evidence-based communication and policymaking.
